Rugby Sevens is one of the world’s fastest growing team sports. It has been brought back into the Olympic Calender as seen by its inclusion in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The Limerick World Club Sevens is an annual professional sevens tournament that takes place in Limerick, Ireland. It involves 12 International Clubs from all over the world including countries such as Fiji, South Africa, Argentina, America, France and the UK. The rugby is played over 2 days and involves 84 players. The standard of the rugby is high as are the expectations of those teams involved.
What they needed
After the initial planning of the tournament had taken place it became apparent that there was a need to bring in a Tournament Director who was able to manage all the diverse operational challenges around the participating teams and the tournament itself. This involved the planning around the teams arrivals, their preparation for and participation in the tournament itself.
This person had to have a background in planning and delivering world class international sporting events. They had to be able to, in a condensed timeframe, recruit and train up volunteers and collaborating with the General Manager, manage the diverse group of stakeholders involved in such a tournament.
What we did
Guy Richardson of Eiger was selected as the Tournament Director for the Limerick World Club Sevens 2015. This short contract required him to quickly agree and implement a plan that not only ensured the success of the tournament but also secure the backing for another tournament in 2016.
What the results were
The Limerick World Club Sevens was deemed a huge success. It has been talked about since that the operational delivery of the tournament was in parallel with the annual World Rugby International Sevens Tournament that takes place across the world every year. Credit on such a project goes to the ‘team performance’ put in by the organising committee and Eiger was delighted to be at the heart of this team.
'Guy Richardson was Tournament Director for the World Club 7's at Thomond Park 2015. His appointment as Tournament Director proved pivotal in delivering a World Class event. Guy's ability to motivate, encourage and empower his team was exceptional and coupled with his exacting attention to detail ensured the operation of the tournament was second to none.
The positive feedback we got from the teams and their immediate request to return the following year rubber stamped Guy's directorship of the tournament.'
